London Riots, Unemployment and the light at the end of the tunnel

So, as we are aware London has not been a fun place to be as of late. People rioting over a variety of things, causing wanton destruction to the very businesses that may have been able to offer them a job – unemployment being the main reason (or so they said) that they were rioting for.

Interesting times - unemployment being so high and yet Campus currently has a variety of Apprenticeship job opportunity on its books and yet some of them have not has a single applicant; even though they are centrally based, have been available for months and offer the opportunity for progression. Yes unemployment is high, yes everyone is feeling the pinch, but there are the opportunities out there, you just need to know where to look.

The challenge is showing people the benefits of Apprenticeships and how it can impact them in later life. On average an Apprentice will earn £100,000 more than someone who has not taken advantage of training opportunities. So how does an Apprenticeship and a regular job differ? Well both offer a salary, both offer holiday pay, but with an Apprenticeship you are guaranteed a minimum of 30 hours a week work, Training and guidance from your assessor, a recognised qualification and most importantly improved job prospects at the end of it!

The definition of an Apprenticeship is; ‘An Apprenticeship is learning and getting a qualification while you are working and getting paid’. So why aren’t people applying for these vacancies? Have we really slipped so far that people choose NOT to get a job, a qualification and succession for the future?

On the flip side of things many, many people take advantage of Apprenticeships every day and now have successful, fulfilling careers in which they excel. Let us hope that others decide to follow by example – in a positive way – and take advantage of the opportunities as well.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel; people have just got to find the tunnel entrance to start with.

As unemployment figures continue to rise, in the UK alone 2.45 million people are currently unemployed. But yet we ask ourselves the question - 'Are people looking at the alternatives?' As a training company we specialise in Apprenticeships in a variety of areas and yet we have vacancies on our books currently that have not been filled. Are people not aware of what an Apprenticeship is? Can we dispel the myths surrounding Apprenticeships?

So what's it all about? Apprenticeships are available for anyone at any age, whether 16 or 60, whether it is a school leaver or someone looking to change their career. People will gain a qualification and experience that they may not have been able to get through other avenues and it allows them the autonomy to control their learning. From the employer’s point of view, they are gaining a skilled, qualified, valuable member of staff who will be able to progress and grow as the Apprenticeship moves forward.

So why is there not more people jumping on the Apprenticeship bandwagon, both employers and learners alike? Is it because people believe that the sectors that Apprenticeships are available in are limited so they don't look at their options? Are Apprenticeship only available for plumbers/ electricians and the like? This is one myth which we will happily dispel. There are now over 180 different sectors to choose from and someone can do an Apprenticeship in anything from Fish Farming to Accountancy.

So is it a lack of knowledge that is preventing these vacancies to be filled, or is it that people just don't like the old fashioned stigma that the word 'Apprenticeship' has attached to it?

Whatever it is, with new Apprenticeship vacancies being added all the time, it would seem that people are unaware of the opportunities that are currently available. We urge people to get in contact and ask about possible vacancies in the South East region. So with unemployment so high and people everywhere looking for work - would you consider being an Apprentice? It seems like the logical choice!

Well, this is Campus Training Limited’s first official Blog, and it would probably be a good idea to tell you all a little bit about us and what we do and direct you to our various Social Media pages.

Campus has been supplying fully funded Government subsidised training, Apprenticeships and Commercial training in Sussex, Kent and Surrey for over a decade.

Specialising in a variety of areas including Customer Service, Team Leading, Business Administration, Supporting Teaching and Learning, Management, Food Manufacturing and Warehousing to name a few.

We deliver a variety of Short courses to a multitude of sectors on both a commercial and funded basis, and take pride in the fact that we have managed to place a lot of Young people in jobs through the Apprenticeship programme. This programme has now been extended out to anyone over the age of 19, and with an entire framework of qualifications within the Apprenticeship, employers have been benefitting from this immensely.
